I disagree entirely. When I watch a film, 100% of the elements I see have been preselected. My only choices are those of interpretation. I cannot move the camera, I cannot control the pacing of events. I cannot control the content to which I am exposed, or the rate at which I am exposed to it. I cannot control the sequence of events, so I have no control over the context in which they take place. Now, in the large sense-- the sense of the story of the Master Chief and Cortana-- my ability to control these is also quite limited. Much action takes place within cutscenes, which are like miniature films with all the limitations those imply. But Halo is in large part an action experience. And in an action film, I have no more control over what I see than any other part of the film. But in the action sequences in Halo, the player is the star and the director. I get a big kick out of watching campaign films from Covenant positions, for instance. Now, I'd certainly like a lot more freedom. I'd like more nonlinearity. I'd like the ability to actually shape the story and force a conclusion of my own choosing, or even my own devising, and I'd like a system robust enough to implement that. It's a long ways off just now. Even full-blown RPGs that try cannot achieve this ideal. But in treating encounters as action vignettes, even Halo can do this. Every sequence tells a little story. I enjoy taking the game out of book, the way Rockslider does-- getting the game to do things that weren't necessarily intended. I like the idea of firefight, the way I like the idea behind L4D, because rather than trying for a full-blown interactive story it boils the story down to the minimum and then lets you control that. It's a start. I would say that for me, in a very real way, I inhabit the Halo environments in a way that is quite a bit more immersive than the way I've inhabited Niven's Ringworld or Asimov's Aurora. I have ScummVM-- I even have it on my iphone, as well as steel sky, monkey 1 and 2, and several others. I also have the remake of Monkey 1 on XBLA-- and I also loved it. I want them to do Monkey 2. : I'm not really sure what you mean. I mean, that when I prioritize what is important for me in Halo ahead of the pure competition angle, a lot of times the response is, "well that's just an interactive movie, it's not a game". To which I mean if the only substance of the argument is the word being used then I'll find another word but I don't think this is a substantive change. Do you know that Nintendo doesn't attend the Tokyo Games Show? The real reason, of course, is that it's because they have their own show, but the reason they tell everybody is because they don't make games. They make toys. I think in a very real way I consider video games more like toys than pure games the way chess is a game or backgammon is a game or tetris is a game. Toys can include games, but toys is a broader category. SimCity is not, strictly speaking, just a game, although it has game elements. Halo is not, strictly speaking, just a game or just a movie. Some work better than others, but I see at least attempts to do this in Oblivion, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Fallout 3. You can't be Rick Blaine in Casablanca in any meaningful way, at least not to me, because who and what Rick Blaine is comes predefined. This is the JRPG school of design, where the designers give you a character and say "be that person". Yahtzee (ZP) mentioned an idea he had about a flexible dialogue system that, instead of requesting multiple-choice options from the player, would use an analog control to 'steer' a conversation towards desired goals. I find that idea intriguing. The western school of RPG design lets you choose who you are, what you do and when, and are TRYING to give you some degree of control either over the outcome, or at least over how that outcome is contextualized. Mass Effect and Fallout 3 both attempt this, in different ways, with different degrees of success. Your chocolate has, most definitely, not been taken away. There is plenty there. I think some are being greedy and want more chocolate and are trying to defy the law of conservation of mass and energy and say that more chocolate can be had without sacrificing peanut butter. I present that the situation is a zero sum game, and that there is already a compromise between chocolate and peanut butter that has, so far, been shown to be fairly near optimal for a very large population, and that most of the ideas profferred to change Halo's design have most likely been tried, within Bungie, and rejected-- and probably for good reason. This seems especially true when you consider how similar the suggested game is to Halo 1.
