I love the heck out of Marathon. : Yet I get the feeling you are advocating Bungie making a game that would : appeal to a few thousand of us fans and not too many others. I see where you're coming from, but I always figured that people weren't as aware of Marathon because "Doom" seemed to be the huge in thing at the time, and Bungie's games were for the Mac. I think a Bungie game using many of the "traits" of Marathon I mentioned would actually appeal to and be fun for the millions of players who have been attracted to the Halo games, especially with added challenge and thinking involved. Video games appear to have become progressively easier over time, but they got to this point in time by remaining popular even when extremely difficult. And Marathon was hardly impossible to beat or extremely insanely difficult to begin with, so it's still accessible. The style would be a big improvement over H3's run, gun, and have little in the way of stopping you aside from maybe 50 people staring you down in one area. : That said I am not an exceptional player. I play on Heroic as a baseline and : finish the games on Legendary because I feel I should. I also played CoD4 : although probably at the default difficulty, which I imagine is the : equivalent of Heroic or below. : I honestly don't see how CoD 4, in terms of challenge, is "not dumbed : down" or "linear" as opposed to Halo 3, for example. In : fact, CoD seems to, in many, many locations, resort to what I think is one : of the cheapest moves in game design: infinitely respawning enemies. If : that's what it takes to create challenge I'm just as happy Bungie is : satisfied being less challenging. That's another good point. I wasn't so much referring to that as I was referring to how much the AI really had it out for me and I had to be smart about how I approached taking out some positions and enemies. It was just as fast paced as Halo manages to be, but it felt even more intense than almost the entirety of H3. : BoBs rarely shot you? : Really? Maybe I just did a good job of staying out of their way. I don't know, but they always seemed to benefit me more often than not. Sometimes they'd get killed off without doing anything, but for the most part they were never in my way. Now, those Simulacrums on the other hand.. FROG BLAST THE VENT CORE! : I'm all for nonlinear levels, nonlinear play, and nonlinear stories. Marathon : infinity took a stab at doing them, and to be honest, they're hard. : Outside of pure sandbox games no one, if you ask me, has really achieved : it. Add to that the problem of asset creation-- HD content takes longer to : author than SD content, and nonlinearity and freedom of exploration means : allowing the player the freedom to skip and/or ignore content. That means : you have to make even more content, so that the player gets a full : experience even if he chooses to skip or ignore great portions of it. This : is what most of the AAA RPGs are doing now. I felt that H1 had that open world feel to it even though it had its limits. The "Halo" level is so grand in that it's already open and able to be explored and wandered off in where no enemies are around after the pod crash at the start, and I can still go about having a fun time sniping Grunts off with the pistol or charging directly in. That and I feel Elites were far more lethal in those situations and needed to be handled with caution, whereas H2 and H3 almost seems like it's far easier to kill them (even when replaying H1 with the skill level I'm at now). From there, the wave after wave of troops before the "omgthiscaveisclearlytotallynotnaturalwow" moment, and then being able to choose which of three areas I go to save Marines first and in any order, and whether I charge in with the hog, snipe from afar, or run in guns blazing! And even then, there's so much filler space and open areas to explore, whereas H2 and H3 are so walled off and limited in scope, and the invisible barriers really bug me (and what appears to be the majority of everyone else here). That's another reason why AotCR and Two Betrayals are my two favorite levels in H1, just based on how many different ways I could go about handling the levels (grabbing the Banshee on the bridge quickly or fighting my way through the entire complex and up to the control room, taking it by foot and flanking in certain areas or just going up the middle, etc). Speaking of AAA RPGs, Mass Effect is my second favorite game behind H1. ME2, for the moment, is my most anticipated game of 2010. Reach is a closed second or tied for first, but I've also seen more of ME2 than I have of Reach (for obvious reasons). So that may change. But a more open world that's less linear, more challenging, and allows me to think, strategize, and forces me to be more observant is never a bad thing. And I think it would still have mass appeal. Reverting back to CoD4 for a moment, it took me 5 hours to beat. That's it. Yet here we see people complaining about ODST's alleged 4 hours (took me 10, but I explore and like to take it all in) and demanding money back (lol) and complaining. The 5 hours in CoD4 were with exploring, with strategizing, being observant, and trying to find nifty places to go and checking out almost every bit and piece of each "level." I can't recall any invisible barriers. It's for all of these reasons that I feel Bungie could benefit from making their future games like the Marathon series and H1, and I'm pretty sure it would appeal to millions and be (arguably) just as successful, at the least, as ODST.
