Bluerunner, and many others, don't care about that as much as having interesting stories and fun games, and having that door shut means there's a very small window where you can show human/Elite adversarial interaction in anything closer than ship battles. : I don't pick and choose my canon. All official Halo material is : my canon and I would appreciate it if it all fit. : As someone who's dedicated much of his free time for 7-8 years now trying to : do just that, the parts that don't fit are beyond frustrating. I'd like it to all fit too, but it's not going to any more without some major retcons-- such as the one about Elites. That goes towards "fixing" the story but you don't like it, so I don't think you'll get what you want until or unless the entire series is rebooted.
