While I haven't played CoD multiplayer for nearly 2 years now, but with all due respect, I'm going to have to disagree with that overall assessment.
CoD4 remains one of my favourite games of this generation for the experience of the single player campaign and its characters. It might not be a giant space opera, but it could be a Tom Clancy novel.
Yet finishing the game on Veteran was one of the most gruelling and unpleasant experiences. Very much a 'never again' with each iteration. I can't exactly say it doesn't require some form of commitment to get through them.
Certainly more than any Halo game, with the exception of Halo 2 on Legendary.
When I think of a casual game, I tend to think more of something that is very easy to play. That almost anyone can pick up and play.
The difference, if you will, between casual and recreational.

Sure you can. You just might not always win. :)
I mean, Ayrton Senna was an immensely talented driver, but one of the times when that was shown most dramatically was when it all went wrong. With his gearbox failing, by the last few laps of the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix, he only had 6th gear, resulting in a constant battle with his machine. Yet he managed to keep the car going, kept the engine from stalling and won the race by 2 seconds. So exhausted from the effort, at the end he had to be lifted out of the car.
While luck and chance, a certain randomness that is beyond peoples control, isn't typically something that should define a sport, I really don't think it should be completely eliminated either.
