In Response To: Re: MLG and Halo: Is this the end of the road? (Schooly D) : No. You think I'm agreeing with your point that you can make competitive : players play anything and they'll love it, and it'll all be the same. : Rather, I think you're agreeing with my point that it's possible to create : a game that's suitable for competitive play out of the box (Halo 2) and is : still fun for everyone else. : The problem is that default Reach, the one you play, is not suitable for
: MLG doesn't want to be forced to alter and contort the game to adapt it to
: They separated from the rank and file out of necessity. : And if MLG Halo is doomed, it's because of lost revenue from much larger
I have frequently read and heard competitive players say "give the casuals anything and they will happily play it". Certainly it has to be just as accurate or inaccurate for the reverse to be true. We are all the same people, education and standard of living for the most part. Not even skill separates us since some of us are motivated to sharpen specific skills and others are not. I would guess most of us are capable of playing must better if we wanted to. Even at my age I could improve by communicating better, practicing more, studying the weapon placements, standardizing and memorizing locations. REACH is just too much fun for me to get that serious. Hell, even the great Schooly D would be be my butt wipe if I were his age again. ;) So I contend, rightly or wrongly, that if MLG had never had anything but default REACH sandbox to play with, them and all of there 'skilled' followers would happily play it to unprecedented levels of success and prosperity. Also, I didn't intend to say elitism and forum strife to be 'the' cause for MLG Halo's potential downfall. I only meant that in my opinion it widened the gap between the groups and certainly did nothing to attract a higher percentage of new players. While I can't prove this one way or the other it seems to be true MLG Halo is perceived to be in trouble by it's own Halo supporters. From that I derive that fewer people are actively getting involved with MLG and/or spending money on it. Is it true MLG Halo is in trouble? I have no evidence beyond mutterings on forums and podcasts like those in the OP.
