In Response To: Re: Marathon Movie (Not!) (REB) Making M1 into a movie would be tricky, but if done right I think it could be pretty damned cool. As mentioned, you couldn't focus on Durandal going Rampant for the plotline, because that's Hal's gig, and it's been done, and done, and done ever since. But I definately think it should still be there. Personally, although I LOVE Momento, I don't think the going backwards thing would work to our advantage. In M1 you start off ignorant and learn as you go, not the other way around. I don't agree with collapsing the AI's all into one AI, but I think Tycho could be essentially written off. I don't think he should be removed, but he'd have a very minor role, as the AI that get's assymilated by Durandal. As for his resurection, well, if it could serve the plot sure, put it in, otherwise, cut cut cut... If an M2 movie were made his resurection could always be explained then... The main character would probably have to be fleshed out a bit more, but there's a good start on this with the dream stuff. I think more would need to be revealed about the Martian conspiracy and about the cyborgs in general, which could be tricky, considering nobody wants to read in a movie... The terminals should still be there, (for nastolgia) but obviously we cannot convey the plot in a movie through them. The AI's would almost certainly have to speak. (IMHO they could speak and display text at the terminals simultaneously, thus not being intirely in conflict with the game, while still being useful.) Of course the use of terminals would also have to be extremely limited. You could probably get away with using about three terminals in the movie, I think. The main thing the movie needs is HUMAN INTERACTION! You need more human characters who interact with the main character, perhaps he should have a partner, love interest, or whatever... more people. Of course, how do you play out the story? Do you play it out as a fight for freedom? Or a descent into madness? There are a lot of themes in M1, you may have to focus more tightly. Yes, you will probably have to REDUCE the story to make it a movie. Ironic, considering Hollywood fancies it-self as the ultimate, but the fact is you probably spent more time playing the demo than watching any one move one time. Of course, most of that is running and gunning, but M1 still has way too much to cram into a movie. You could not reproduce the text from all of the terminals, even as being read aloud by the AI's. If you did the movie would be nothing but a string of running monologues by one AI after another. blah... My personal preference would be to skip around, in other words, show important events ect, and things that could have happened in M1 (well you'd have to, stretch it a bit) but just skip over stuff you can't show, without showing it to have not happened in the movie's story. In other words, just because something cannot be in the movie, doesn't mean that the movie has to pretend it didn't happen. Skipping should be the default method of cutting as long as it works. Speaking of Akira... (in the bit about Fallout) How about a Marathon anime instead of a movie!? Sure a lot of anime is all about nekkid women and gore, but not all. Some anime even have compelling plotlines and I personally think the Marathon story would go well in the format. If you wanted to really go overboard you could make Marathon into an anime series. Then you'd have enough screen time to fully represent all of the elements in the Marathon story, however, you'd have to come up with a GREAT deal of extra plot stuff in order to actually pull it off. Oh, and lest any of us forget, movie, anime or whatever... we need not necessarily just follow this dumb cyborg around all the time! Of course that's how the game plays out, but you witness that first person, this would be third person, so we'd definately want to move around to other characters... like Bernhard Strauss, Volker Von Müller, and Robert Blake. M1 showed us only part of what was going on. |
