We _must_ have at least one BoB-B-Q at the beginning, we just can't have any red blood. This establishes two things. One, we see just how evil the Pfhor are (murdering unarmed civilians who are trying to surrender). And two, that the BoBs will lose without aid. It also sets up a possible motive for the marine being aboard. He left the surface because he knew the Marathon would be a target. The BoBs had no one to help defend it or themselves. He wasn't running from the surface combat like a coward, he was running towards a different battle.

A key plot point will be when the marine has a weapons jam while facing a Pfhor. A BoB pops up & throws him a fresh weapon. The marine would die if not for the BoB in the right place, at the right time. Cliche? Perhaps. Payback isn't allways a bitch.

Too complex. The Marathon movie is the story of how one being, in the right place & the right time, can turn the tide of history. We're just not sure which being will win.
