In Response To: Re: Mmm Marathon movie (:: Beer Can ::)

[snip]

: Marathon, made into a film, would be hugely *expensive*.

True, but a 4 function calculator was expensive in 1974. There's a lot of CGI involved here, but the cost per frame keeps dropping every day. Also if the flick is shot entirely from the POV of the cyborg, you could hire Michael J. Fox for scale plus a half-point (a couple weeks work that he can do anytime, in any wardrobe, anyplace in the world he likes), saving $20+ mil on the upfront price of an Ahnold or a Sly. Fox is too short to wear the suit, but he's fantastic as a voice actor. View 'Dear America' for proof. Keep the ad budget to a minimum. Screen it for lots of critics. Talk up the theme of the individual vs. society. Freedom vs. responsibility. Leela the Earth Mother defending her children. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Lay the metaphor on thick. Critics love that crap.

: Therefore, the story would have to be readjusted to a more
: "popular" palette (read: dumbed-down) because of the risk
: involved.

Dumbed down is a relative term. Definitely have to keep the red blood & language toned down (energy weapons help lots here) to get a PG-13 at most. No use of the 'F' word, but 'Put a cyborg behind the trigger' would be cool. Think Shrek or Pee-Wee Herman. I would never have seen Shrek when I did but for the fact my 10 year old cousin wanted to go for his birthday. The kids missed most of the really funny jokes, but they will learn...or else!

[snip]

: Actually, the Marathon story is suited for a game, but not for a film, unless
: restructured: Most of the in-game Marathon "story" is a bloke
: running around shooting things up. The rest of the "story" is a
: dot-to-dot of terminals that must be read and digested.

Voice acting. Debra Messing. The terminal audio only works short range, though. Flashbacks. Cyborg slumps against a wall after surviving a nasty firefight. The action freezes as the flashback begins. Flashback runs. Action resumes exactly at the point it froze. Cyborg forces himself to his feet, checks weapon, soldiers onward. Think 'that Greek guy & the rock'. Total elapsed in-film time: zero.

: The delivery of the narrative couldn't possibly work like that in a film,
: especially given the "episodic" level structure of a game. Much
: would have to be compressed and repackaged for a different kind of
: consumption.

Or split into several movies. Bonus!

: And HAL 9000 was many years before Durandal, so taking the talking AI route
: would be weak, lame, and artistically bankrupt.

Or hommage to the late, great 'Stan da Man'. Nobody did it better. It's all in how you spin it...

: Which brings to mind the similarities between HAL and Durandal. Before
: Clarke's "for-money" perversion called 2010, that is.

Hal was born innocent but was driven to insane acts by having to live a lie that he knew would be discovered (this never quite made it into the movie). Durandal was driven insane through torture. Close, but different enough. Especially if we experience the nature of that torture.

: But, alas: None of this is really worth thinking about.

Unless *I* get a cut... :D

: Back to Rubicon...
