MEMENTO was an "art film," and as such, was immensely *inexpensive*.

Marathon, made into a film, would be hugely *expensive*.

Therefore, the story would have to be readjusted to a more "popular" palette (read: dumbed-down) because of the risk involved.

However, if you were blessed with an idiot's luck in life, as was Bill Gates, and have endless pockets, then the $100-million+ you'd be out (making a Marathon movie) wouldn't hurt much.

(one good thing I'll say about George Lucas is the guy puts his money where his mouth is: Uncle George finances his pictures with his own bread)

Actually, the Marathon story is suited for a game, but not for a film, unless restructured: Most of the in-game Marathon "story" is a bloke running around shooting things up. The rest of the "story" is a dot-to-dot of terminals that must be read and digested.

The delivery of the narrative couldn't possibly work like that in a film, especially given the "episodic" level structure of a game. Much would have to be compressed and repackaged for a different kind of consumption.

And HAL 9000 was many years before Durandal, so taking the talking AI route would be weak, lame, and artistically bankrupt.

Which brings to mind the similarities between HAL and Durandal. Before Clarke's "for-money" perversion called 2010, that is.

But, alas: None of this is really worth thinking about.
