In Response To: Re: Mmm Marathon movie (Rick Blaine)

First of all...

Why is it you feel the effects of a Marathon movie are "now finally doable"? And "hugely expensive"?

Have I missed something, or what?

There's nothing in the Marathon 1, 2, or 3 scenario that couldn't have been done in 1991. You wouldn't even need CG (but it would, of course, be used today).

Starship interiors. Pfhor. Guys running around with guns. A computer. Some "outer space" exteriors.

Big deal!

You do realise that STAR WARS was shot in the mid-70's, right? And that 2001 was made in the late 60's...?

ALIEN in late 70's?

ALIENS in the early/mid-80's?

TERMINATOR in 1980...T2 in 1989/90?

All of these films are as big in scale and scope (or bigger) than any Marathon movie might be.

Hell, you could make a passable Marathon movie with an out-of-work actor, a Canon Elura, and an abandoned aircraft carrier. Throw in some skinny dudes in latex, an Apple Cinema Display (or two), and away you go...

Might even have room in the budget for an Adam West voice-over.

I also take issue with your being so certain a Marathon movie will make big bucks. No one really knows what's going to do what, though some things are more easily predicted than others.

Special Effects does not always = Big Dollars.

Thank God.

Marathon has a murky, muddy storyline. There's no way you can compare to STAR WARS' massive universe of people, places, and empires. Marathon's "universe" does not have the luxury of a universally cross-culturally palatable "hook" that stories like STAR WARS and LORD OF THE RINGS possess.

A Marathon movie would probably watch like JUDGE DREDD meets 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

Yawn.

In Marathon's case, it has a far better chance of being successful as a novel than as a film. In a novel, you'd be able to fully and completely explore the Marathon universe (such as it is), perhaps even bypassing the connection to a Marathon game (as to not alienate 80% of potential buyers).

Not only that, a Marathon NOVEL would likely be a better and more satisfying natural extension.

But what would separate a Marathon novel from all the other ORIGINAL science-fiction on the shelves...?

Also, your references to people attempting the impossible, and what would have happened to the planet if they hadn't:

Man, how many times has someone claimed to have reinvented the wheel, only to have nothing worth looking at? How many times have people claimed to be of "vision," citing examples of history's great explorers and what not, only to be finally proven a myopic and deluded soul, slated for destruction...?

If Marathon (or Myth, for that matter) were going to "catch fire," it likely would have by now. "Myst" did. "Diablo" did. "Duke Nukem" even did. There's something about Marathon that's not "organic." It hasn't naturally taken-hold. It's too muddy.

Too...too.

Myth and Marathon lack likable, fully defined characters. Note that I don't say "fleshed-out," only "defined." Argue all you like, but facts is facts. Only Soulblighter, with his adolescent, comic-book rhythm has anything close to "characterisation." The rest of the cast is just unremarkable "game fodder," as they say.

And Marathon? Forget about it: A two-dimensional AI and a zero-dimensional, non-speaking first-person male. Hell, there's mopre characterisation in a Pfhor Trooper's body language than in Durandal's entire term library...

Not to mention the fact that Durandal is not exactly "likable." As if words on a screen could warm the ebb of your latent humanity.

But wait! There's more!

A lot of Marathon's "brilliant plot lines" are colossal, gargantuan "literary" patches applied to a waterline ripe with holes.

Aside the fact that Bungie is not exactly known for its love and pursuit of "original" content. Can you say "largely derivative"? Or maybe, "change the names to protect the guilty"?

Face it:

You're a Marathon fan.

It works for you.

It's a subjective experience, one that you enjoy.

That's it.

Most of the rest of the world doesn't share that.

And it's not as if Marathon didn't get its chance at bat.

It did.

Marathon is not "built" for popular consumption.

Doesn't make it good or bad, just is.

And as for...

>Unfortunately, the same argument applies to
>Halo as it does to Marathon, but to a lesser
>degree. Is there any hope?

I know of NO ONE, not a single person, who's aware of "Halo"...beyond this group. No one I know owns it, runs it, talks about it, or seems to know it even exists.

And how do its sales figures compare to that of, say, Diablo, Sim City, and Command & Conquer...?
