I don't suppose anyone else here has read "Cowl", by Neal Asher?
His theory was that there was a "trunk" timeline from which divergent possibilities split off. Any alteration of the timeline results in a 'split' from the that careens off into hypertime. You could travel freely between the trunk and these alternate timelines, but there was a catch - the further away (ie, the more differences between the Trunk and your original timeline) from the Trunk you were, the more energy it took to work your way back up the 'slope' of the timeline to the Trunk.
So you could always return to the world you started in, but the more you changed things (accidentally or on purpose) the harder it was to get back to where you wanted to be. You could, for instance, save your parents from a car crash by finding the timeline where they didn't die - just as long as that timeline wasn't too 'hyperdistant' from your own.
Of course, this begs questions like 'How do you know which is the Trunk and which isn't?', 'What about the future?', and 'wouldn't the practically infinite multiplicities of time travellers close to each other, hyperdimensionally speaking, start very badly interfering with each other?'. None of which I'm sure I can answer, since it was an understandably confusing book. I think the answer to the first is 'The Trunk timeline contains no time travellers at any point, since the mere presence of one starts taking you down the "slope".'
Also, the fact that an unbelievably advanced civilization millions of years in the future was warring with a hideously intelligent member of itself who had relocated back into the Precambrian, and who was ravaging timelines with an unimaginable hyperdimensional flesh-beast, sort of made everything even more complicated.
Neal Asher tends to take it pretty far.
