| In Response To: Re: this is awesome, I love this stuff (Forrest of B.org) I’ve been thinking about time-travel paradoxes (or whatever you call the weirdness) ever since I first saw the Back to the Future movies and their flawed model. What I came up with before I accepted the possibility of multilinear time, was pretty much what MrHen did: Time only flows forward, from the past to the future, never backward. If you go back in time and change your past or the world’s past in any way, you yourself remain unchanged, because you exist independently of the future timeline; if you went back to the present, you’d be the only one unchanged. But who says Time never flows backward? I think this is simply a narrow, simplified view of multilinear time, as seen from the time-traveler’s point of view. Multilinearity just makes it easier to explain why Time doesn’t explode: you don’t change the past, you just enact a different past. You don’t cause paradoxes, you just change branches. You’re unchanged because your past still happened, albeit in a different timeline. I’m not saying MrHen is wrong that there’s only one lone timeline. I’m just saying, you don’t know. You can’t see the other timelines. The unilinear perceptions he described fit just as well in multilinear time, and make more sense besides. As to the argument that the original timeline is gone because you can’t access it: it’s still there, it’s just inaccessible. You’re thinking dimension-travel, or timeline-hopping, not time-travel. Right now, you can’t go back in time. Does that mean the timeline up to now is gone? No matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, you will never be in exactly the same circumstances you are in at this very moment, down to the specks of dust in the air. But it still happened. Here’s another analogy: If you lose contact with a friend for many years, it doesn’t necessarily mean that friend disappeared, you just don’t have the means to contact him.
