If I drive down a road, turn around and go back, then drive down that same segment of road, I have just travelled two different four-dimensional paths. They overlap in three dimensions but are offset along time. It's impossible to ever truly take the same path through spacetime twice, because if you did, there would be two of you in the same place at the same time. Though with time loops, it might be possible for there to be two of you near each other at the same time.
Likewise, if I live to be 24 (as I am now), go back in time and "change" the timeline (say I kill my younger self), then travel back to the future... sure, it looks like the timeline has "changed", but as I still have memories of it having been different "originally", and other things about me are the way they are because of events in that original timeline (I have scars from a car accident that wouldn't have happened if I didn't exist then and there), then you cannot say that the original timeline has truly been undone or overwritten. It still exists somewhere. You can never get back to it, but it's still there.
