From what I understand, if you go back to the past to change it, you'll create another timeline for yourself but what you change will not affect the people that you left behind (I'm trying to see if I understand this or if I'm just going off into the deep end here...)
For example...take this ugly text line of dashes below me here:
[] = us/you/me/him/it/that grouchy old lady you used as a test subject...
1999 ---------------------------- [2006]
You start in 2006 and there's some event that you want to change in 1999...Your brother ran over your hamster with his car...repeatedly. Something like that.
So you go back in time to 1999 and stop your brother from killing your hamster...by say...beating him with a bat in his sleep.
What the timeline looks like now:
ORIGINAL TIMELINE:
1999 ----------------------------- 2006 ----> (the Future....OOOOOH!!!)
SECOND TIMELINE:
[1999] (nothing's happened yet...) ---->
So now there are two timeline's running at the same time...the timeline that the people you knew in the original 2006...they still are having a future, doing drugs, having illegitimate children with your sister, etc...and according to their timeline (and technically YOUR timelines...), you left in 2006 in a retard adventure to save your pet hamster.
According to your CURRENT present, you're in 1999, you've saved your hamster...and now you're stuck, because you can't get back to 2006, because you've changed the past and you are no longer on the original timeline...basically, you've wiped the slate clean past 1999.
So if you just left the timeline you just created and say...went back to 1990, there'd be three timelines going...the original, where you left in 2006, the second where you disappeared in 1999 after murdering your sibling, and this new, third one, where you appeared in 1990 so you can do god knows what. Basically, you can go back into the past...but you can't ever go into the future.
