Take a look at a post where somebody is being sarcastic. Ask yourself what point they are trying to make. Ask yourself if they could make that point without being sarcastic. Ask yourself why they chose to be sarcastic.

Ferrex made his points, but he didn't need to be sarcastic to do it. He was belittling my points to make my perspective seem less valid. I don't think that was necessary. A good argument stands on its own and a poor one can be poked to pieces easily enough on its own lack of merits. Sarcasm attacks the person, not the argument, and is a cheap trick. Anybody can attack a person. Jack's an idiot. There. See? I just did it and it took zero effort. Of course, this is why sarcasm is so popular - it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

It's not only cheap, it's nasty. And it's not only nasty, but it is nastiness masquerading as something else, which is, in my opinion, cowardly. There is enough nastiness in this world - especially on the Net - and it serves no purpose except to make people feel bad. That, as far as I know, is not the purpose of this forum.

This is going to sound pretty hollow, but I'll say it anyway: my one use of sarcasm did serve a purpose, which was to point out how ridiculous was his defence of sarcasm. And, btw, I don't mean to dump on Ferrex. He's certainly not the only one being sarcastic around here.

The other thing wrong with sarcasm is that it is meant to be delivered with a certain tone and body language. You can't do that over the net and it is often misinterpreted.
