In Response To: Re: Stop the presses. (vector40)

: Oh, right. You posted this on a Halo forum for no other reason than to
: practice your HTML formatting and an interesting mental exercise. I'll
: bet.

You've peppered me with posts here, Vector and I won't reply to them all. I do wish you would stop second-guessing my motives or my integrity, however. I don't think I've done anything to incite that kind of reaction.

:Trite quoting and packaged literary dogma is amusing, but serves little purpose.

Either does sarcasm or the use of loaded terms. It's cheap contempt and ignorant. No need to be either. Anyway, enough of that...

Since you asked, the exercise I engaged in earlier is is called principled negotiation: defining interests, generating options (even crazy options), evaluating best solutions and so forth and is laid out in a negotiating book by Ury and Fry called "Getting to Yes". I didn't invent it, but I think it's useful. Here's a site that talks about http://www.colorado.edu/conflict/peace/treatment/pricneg.htm

The generating options part is not necessarily meant to be realistic, but is an attempt to define your bargaining boundaries. I used the proxy angle because I wanted think of it from the collective fans' view, as opposed to my own. Bungie doesn't give a damn about A. Rex or John Q. Public or Jane Doe, but they might care if all three (hundred) of them felt the same way. That's what I was trying to demonstrate. I failed, obviously, because nobody got it.

As for what is reasonable solutions or suggestions, I think I did make a couple. My role, if you will, wasn't to create reasonable solutions, but to engage in thinking about why I felt the way I did about the game and how I might go about feeling differently. That's a reasonable thing to do, in my opinion.

I think it was you that said, in another post, that game companies don't owe their fans anything (if it wasn't you, please accept my apologies); I think that's a load of bull. Manufacturers/designers don't work in a void and wouldn't exist without their fans. The relationship is symbiotic, if asymmetric.

Finally, you accuse me in one breath of misrepresenting myself by claiming to speak for others on the board and then in another try and tell me that they are 'in awe of my mastery of the English language.' Who's claiming to speak for whom now?

Respectfully,

Anonymous Rex
