I think one of the reasons 'nobody got it' is because Bungie, in fact, does more for and with its fans than almost any gaming company out there. (I say almost because if I leave it out, someone is sure to point out a company that does more... but I don't know of any.) You say you're disappointed by Halo - okay, that's certainly your prerogative. You said, in a different post (I don't want to go looking for it now) that you were out $700, which you didn't think Halo was worth, but returning the equipment didn't serve your needs, or something - this is the part at which you left the realm I would consider reasonable. All the rest of that stuff - Bungie already does that! We've gotten boxes of goodies to give away from Bungie (and have given it away). Bungie does things like Launch Parties, and Fanfests (okay, most of the fanfests have been organized by a particular fan... but Bungie has kicked in, financially). And at the fanfests, even the ones not organized by Bungie, they give away free stuff - at the E3 fest, they had 3 Xboxes and copies of Halo to give away! (Well, the promise of them once they were released, anyway.) I'm a fan - I run this site because I love the company and I think the people are good people. I've broken bread with them - I consider a number of them personal friends at this point. A week before the MS buyout, they cared enough about their fansites that they called several to warn them of the upcoming sale - because they thought we should be in the loop. (You might look at that and say "well, they just did that so that you wouldn't turn on them after the sale"... and maybe they did. But the bottom line was, they respected FANS enough to let the fan-run sites know something was up.) The reason, I think, you're seeing such hostility to your approach is because you seem to think that Bungie owes you something FOR YOUR EXPECTATIONS. I'd agree that any company has an obligation to their fans - and Bungie honors this obligation more than most. That obligation, though, is due to your support of the company, NOT your expectations for any one game. Does Sierra owe Mac users money because they cancelled Half-Life for Mac? They built an expectation up in us... then scrapped the project. Don't we deserve compensation for the loss we suffered? (If you read that last sentence and said 'yes, dammit!', I'm wasting my breath... or fingers, or whatever.) | |
