In Response To: Re: My final words on the topic ... for the moment (General Vagueness) : I see roughly this same thing tossed around in a lot of conversations like : these but I've never really understood it. What do you mean? Oh I hate to be the one to link to TV tropes- but here you go Rape As Drama One - rape is horrific (and not necessarily sexually motivated) it's about power and taking power.
Therefore it's the one stop shop for adding instant drama to a story. And when it's done to men, it's considered comedy, because it's funny when a man loses power, for some bizarre and twisted reason. See Farscape for male-rape done 'right' (if you'll forgive the unfortunate turn of phrase) Now that seems cheap to me. I want to hurt my character, for an indeterminate amount of time. I'm going to get them raped. Now, Jillybean, you ask. She couldn't exactly die, how could we ensure drama? Well, here's the thing - we're never entirely sure if Cortana's playing a huge xanatos gambit or not. In fact, to my mind, the ending of Halo 2 set it up to look as though she might consider teaming up with Gravemind. How about the drama coming from the fact the Chief didn't know if his best friend (his only remaining friend) might betray him or not. Maybe he has to terminate her program, coming from ONI's orders and the 'Cortana' level is about him planting a bomb, and Cortana uses those creepy flashes, not to shriek in pain, but to plead with the Chief to trust her? Or if you simply must have Cortana in pain somehow, how about she learns something from Gravemind and has to choose whether to sacrifice the Chief (her friend ) or the Arbiter and UNSC's eventual hope for peace? Why must the female character be imperiled in the fashion that makes her a victim? Why must she be rescued by a tin can of a man? Or go the other way. If you're going to have a female character raped (or pseudo-cyber-raped) how is she going to come out of that on the other side? Are we going to see her revel in mainframes again? Or struggle to interact with other characters in the same way as she did before? Is she going to question herself, or feel angry about what's happened to her? Is she simply going to be relieved and try to push it all away behind her. There's absolutely no hint of how Cortana feels other than she is glad to be rescued, and she is thankful. You might not think that's a bad thing. But I think she has thousands of years to sit on a broken space ship and think about a horrible traumatic experience, while her rescuer sleeps his troubles away. Go girl power.
