My biggest concern with this whole matter is right here. I agree that the situation Cortana is in definitely looks and feels like rape. I will admit that even on my very first play-through the thought ran through my head, "Yeesh, she kinda sounds like she's getting... you know." And this made me very uncomfortable. Here's my issue: why is it bad to use rape? Why is it bad that Cortana's situation looks like rape? Bear in mind that I'm not saying it's good; I genuinely do not understand why rape is off-limits as a narrative device. Would it be better if it weren't subliminal? Like, what if there was a video game that castes the player as a man who had to save a woman from a bunch of thugs that were LITERALLY going to rape her? Would this be considered acceptable story-telling? Here's a mental exercise I like to do when addressing issues of sexism: Role Reversal. Let's say the player is cast as a woman who has to save a man from being raped by a gang of thugs (for the purposes of this exercise, let's assume the "thugs" are of mixed genders). How does this make me feel? Is this a concept that I feel reflects negatively on the male gender as a whole or is this an isolated story that remains quiet on issues of gender? Let's get back on topic. Is there something about the subliminal nature of Halo 3's "rape" scene that makes it "bad"? Isn't rape being depicted in a negative light in Halo 3? What (if anything) does Halo 3's subliminal depiction of rape say about women in general? These questions are not rhetorical. I would genuinely like to hear answers to these questions as these are the questions that I do have answers to.
