In Response To: Re: also... (BanditORR) : Wow. That's a hell of a lot of presumption based off one sentence. I never : said that, and I don't believe it. : As Vagueness just kind of stated- I don't believe any of this is relevant if
: All of this ignores the immense amount of arrogance it takes to tell someone
because I know I'm generally outclassed in this discussion, but I do have a comment about the interpretation/intent thing. Let's say you read a two-hundred year old book. The author is dead and never left any commentary on the work. The only way to determine intent is to interpret. Let's say you read the book and get all kinds of wild social ideas. There's a minor character that just feels like he has tons of mystery behind him. You read this book and get these ideas based on your interpretation of it. The author had no idea there were social ideas, and that minor character was pulled out of his ass to fill a simple role, nothing more to him. Is your interpretation any less valid? The answer is no. So yeah, with Halo, you know who the authors are, you can hear them comment on their intentions, you can watch behind-the-scenes, whatever. That doesn't mean an interpretation different from the intent is wrong. There are all kinds of forces that act on authors, and most of them are subconscious. Maybe they put Cortana in a shitty situation to give the Chief an objective, and it never crossed their minds that the situation could be construed as rape. They changed the Arbiter's name before Halo 2 released because they were afraid of the connotations of the original (Dervish) - that was something they modified because, despite a complete and total lack of intent to cause offence, they recognized that someone out there could interpret it as offensive. Regardless of intent, a work has the potential to reinforce or tear down pre-existing stereotypes and ideas. Part of the reason for this is that, while we here at HBO are part of a community where the authors and administrators of the story frequent, and we all watch the interviews and read the commentaries, the vast majority of people who experience Halo do not. The intent of the authors is not known to that much larger population. All they have to go on is what they see and read in the stories themselves.
