The author's intent and one's personal : interpretation are not, in fact, one and the same. That is certainly true. Not having read the article being discussed here (yeah, I know, terrible), I can't comment as to whether or not it is asserting that the intent was for the scene to be one of rape. That's not the point. Whether or not the author was thinking, "Scene four dash one, Cortana gets raped" is irrelevant - what's important is that the scene can be construed that way. It isn't an attack, necessarily, on the authors, just bringing to light a fairly important way in which the scene can be viewed. To put it another way, you can accidentally say something that was initially inane and later draw from it some inspiration or understanding. You ever say something that was construed by those around you as racist, even though the original thought wasn't? You certainly didn't intend to insult anyone, and someone taking the time to understand your intentions would be aware of that, but the initial reaction to the statement can lead to you better understand the ways in which words can be [mis]understood.
