You can read : anything into anything so I don't think they'd help in understanding : anything but the person making the interpretations-- which is : self-examination, it's self-exploration, that's good, but that doesn't : mean you have to tell the world, and it certainly doesn't mean you have to : say your interpretation shows some great meaningful truth about society. It's all about what you do with your interpretation. If you come to an interesting conclusion, it doesn't matter if it's right or not. By sharing your understanding of a story with others who may have experienced it differently, you are able to broaden your own abilities to understand narratives. When I played through the discussed level in Halo 3, I didn't see the rape theme (or the vagina imagery; like other games with organic technology [I'm thinking Starcraft and Prey specifically], I just saw something alien); because of this discussion, I do see it and, while I may not argue in the future that the scene is about rape, I am aware of the ideas behind that interpretation. I'm certainly no worse off for that knowledge, and maybe better for it. If you don't feel that the sharing of these differing experiences with the fiction is something worthwhile, then don't participate. I've been a part of these forums for nigh on seven years now (although under a different handle for the majority of it), and I've both seen and participated in some very heated and well-argued discussions about where the story is going and where it's been based on different understandings of events in the material. Days-long arguments about mere sentences uttered by 343 Guilty Spark that had implications for the status of humanity as descendent or replacement, whether or not Rampancy was part of the Halo canon, more arguments than I can possibly list, and all because at least two people saw the same thing and got something different. I can't count the cases where the final reveal was completely different than what was argued, but that doesn't invalidate those discussions. >>>@ Jillybean: I only prefaced my post with that disclaimer because I have a tendency to get into these things and get countered with rather well-constructed arguments that I'm not prepared to refute, and - like any other human - I'm usually not willing to give in on my end, either.
