Part of feminism in media is that when a woman is in those roles, it reinforces an archetype for the viewer. You're right, a reckless, 'almost competent' male who needs to get rescued would not be considered in the same light. Instead, he would be brash, child-like, and ultimately inferior to the rescuing characters. However, that is traditionally a woman's role, and when the 'almost competent' character is a woman, we need to wonder why? Is it because that is her character, or because the creators felt only a woman could be that character? I'm inclined to say that Miranda is not so offensive as some others. Her father (and mother) are both rash and full of hubris on many occasions. I also maintain that the original interpretation of Halsey is very much 'evil scientist' (which brings up more of my pet peeves but anyway). For me, there's a convincing argument to say that Miranda has character flaws. What causes problems is Cortana, because when you have such a blatant representation of damsel, damaging rape, mental anguish and objectification, it colours your vision of a female character who otherwise would have been thought of as just rash. : Makes me wonder how she would rip apart the character of the Arbiter if it : were a "she". What would she conclude about the torture : sequence, and being forced into military servitude to atone for past : "sins"? But no, because the Arbiter is male she glosses right : over all that and focuses instead on how noble he is, even calling him a : "knight in shining armor". HARDLY the description the Arbiter : would have for himself, I think. Well, I haven't read her article, but I'd suggest that being a male character, he's not the focus of her feminist critiques ;) Male characters have been run through the gamut. However, a discussion of sentience in other species and how we must force flaws on them as humans, would make this point valid.
