With a diagram! :P (thebruce0) : In short: (Good) Linear games do provide choices, multiple paths and routes : that personalize the experience of solving the problem at hand. We're getting pretty tangential here, but this is the very point... these kinds of choices, while useful, are not "significant" in that they don't ultimately shape outcomes. Regardless of your choices, the outcomes are the same. Now that isn't to say these choices don't foster an interesting level of depth to problem solving, but in the end, it's still problem solving, not choice. When the outcome is always the same, or obvious, choice (as defined by this video) is unattainable; instead, this is just adding a few layers of complexity to problem solving. Still, what you describe is certainly very valuable with regard to making linear tasks interesting. Having multiple ways to approach each encounter is one of the best things about Halo.
