This is where I think we part ways, HP. Inferences are a sophisticated way to tell a story. Reach, unlike most action games, is passive, in that what you do most of the time doesn't seem effectual. (This also makes it a heck of a lot more realistic.) You make tons of choices on the order of how do I best achieve the current objective (or kill this enemy in front of me), so you're viscerally in the world, but you are repeatedly shown how little you can do to affect the outcome of the story. This seems a weakness to some, who feel depth of character is somehow connected to agency in the world. But that isn't this story--because so little can be done to affect what you experience, the story, if you let it, becomes about how the experience affects you. It's risky, because gamers have become accustomed to summer blockbuster action plots, whereas Reach, in many ways, is an art house thought piece.
