You're supposed to assume Six did all he could and has ended up here, among some other slain Spartans in some kind of a last stand. Obviously this wasn't clearly communicated, but that's the sentiment I got. Of course, just about all of the laudations for the game's story are borne out of these poorly communicated moments where we're apparently supposed to infer depth. But a lot of these inferences seem to be made out of hooks of ambiguity that honestly don't feel intentional; mostly because the game is otherwise riddled with lackluster dialogue, canon inconsistencies, a disjointed narrative, and plot coupons. Really, the only thing that doesn't require inference to enjoy is the atmosphere of the game... and sometimes I feel that could have been even better than it already is (e.g. Regrets fleet at Delta Halo felt waaaay larger than anything on Reach).
