I think this was one of the reasons I disliked Reach's supporting cast so much. It felt like it did a very bad job of buttressing my play experience compared to the other games. I'm still trying to find out way, beyond the obvious 'their dialogue was bad' and 'they did not interact in ways more complex than limited pairs'. Now I'm tempted to cast a critical eye on myself and say that this was maybe in part because the characters were defined in relation to each other, rather than in relation to me. But the inter-character relationships in previous Halo games, like the Johnson/Miranda byplay or the ODST squad, clicked for me in a way Reach's empty tin men didn't. (Or is it only because I got to be all the ODSTs? I don't know. I never really felt like I was Romeo...Buck or not-Wash a bit more so.) Obviously YMMV.
