In Response To: Re: What we expect in MTA and M4 (cB557) : Gonna have to disagree with MTA 6. Boss fights are pretty easy to make shit
Who says you actually kill the W'rkncacnter? sure you fight it but you can't actually kill it. they're gods, or trans-sentient species similar to the god species. when you win an W'rk boss fight, you can only just just piss it off enough so it runs away in disgust flipping the player the bird. the Pfhor won't be beaten simply because you kill Tfear, oh no. we wouldn't get any sequels then. The Pfhor could just elect a new Fleet Admiral in their British politic/Hasbro employee way of command and order. Also, the fact that you frighten off the Pathways W'rk in one hit after killing off his mates makes his kind look more like cowards rather than invulnerable visual laxatives from Cthulu's Christmas card list that can form irregular galaxies just by farting out whatever mortal curry they had for dinner like the Turtle from IT. It needs this because Marathon Infinity is the Halo 2 of Marathon: a great story of multiple perspectives, similar story elements to its successor/predecessor, juicy but impossible to find without cheating secrets (Skulls, Soccer ball scarab gun etc. in Halo and Hats off to 819 in Marathon) and a shit cliff-hanger ending, the only difference of which is that the Great Journey is at least fun to play and easy to navigate. Aye Mak Sicur was a great idea but it was one of the few maps in Marathon where even of the readable automap couldn't save you, it had no decent final boss enemies besides that one cookie-cutter juggernaut in Hanger 96, and a final gameplay message that essentially says, "right that's yer lot, the threat is gone and Durandal appears to stop believing it existed when clearly it did, now bugger off." Even Icon of Sin in Doom 2 was a lazy hack that had potential to be something more than we got (possibly due to technical limitations and/or the dev team running out of imagination): It could have been an actual entity instead of a painted wall that we shoot three times with an RPG or once with a BFG for example. It could have been blown open in the Icon of Sin level and the rest of the fight could have been deep inside it; swimming in its bloodstream, killing its organs and blowing up its giant beating heart in the shape of John Romero's head, tying in with his demon chant joke, before escaping its dying body back out to hell's surface through its bowels.
