3D models can be optional as a plugin but not active by default. you'd need to unlock them by beating the game so you would see the sprites first then make a judgement after. I'm with you on the Duke Nukem comparison but it was Duke Nukem Forever, not 3D that did away with the older shooter style. (despite remaining somewhat fun on PC at least due to minigames, platforming and new monsters but that was pretty much it)
