(Gravemind) : And since somebody mentioned Isaac Hannaford, here's some of his concepts : here . : It all looks practical, functional, and like it has an aesthetic connection : to not only previous incarnations of Mjolnir armor but also that of both : the UNSC military and, in some ways, modern real life militaries. Halo 4's : armors... not so much. They look out of place, with a rather inhuman : design that doesn't look remotely like it was designed by the UNSC, they : have no design precedent, and they are incredibly generic. One could be : excused for thinking that it's not Halo armor, but rather something from : some other sci-fi/action video game. I think this is the core of the problem to me; the new armors aren't up to the standard of quality set by the previous Halo titles, and instead look like they belong in a forgettable second-rate SF shooter. Looking at IH's designs and H4's abominations back to back, the difference is massive. Most of the H4 armors scream "rookie artist" to me; it's like the one who designed them hasn't yet learned that filling every available inch with pointless crap won't compensate for the lack of a solid, recognizable general shape or a focused stylistic direction. : The art department at 343I must be : total anarchy, where everyone is allowed to do pretty much whatever so : long as it looks kinda-sorta-maybe-vaguely Halo-ish. It's artistic license : gone mad. I've been complaining for some time that 343i underestimates the importance of the visual side of things and gives artists too much freedom (or that their artists can't restrain themselves). This has been apparent in their lack of control of visuals in ancillary media like comics and such, but it's disappointing that the same neglectful attitude carries over to something as major as the next Halo game. One has to wonder what does their "art director" even do if not keep the art direction in check, though it might be that MP armors are just considered secondary to everything else. It goes against 343i's philosophy of everything being connected, but I guess that doesn't apply to visuals.
