I've thought about this a bit today, and I can theorize some backstory. It's deep into the future, and after the Covenant war, I expect some things to look "alien" from the UNSC as they start utilizing new knowledge and research from after the war. Perhaps they have technology now where you can completely be in an enclosed helmet, and see what's outside from small cameras, maybe even nano in size, or something wild. I don't know -- it being in the 2500s helps me believe these possibilities.
