I always assumed it was for the benefit of non-Spartans who might use the weapons (who may not have HUDs with all of that information integrated). Same with old-school sights and scopes, which are integrated with the MJOLNIR HUD. However, you would expect a bit more customization options on some weapons (such as rails). I don't have much experience with assault rifles as you might have guessed, so I can't speak very well to those. I used to complain about the design of the shotgun (the breach seems to feed the ammo tube directly, but how is the round actually chambered? how does that pump work if the tube is above the barrel?). And of course, there's the notion of reloading with partial clips and not losing the ammo that should still be in that clip... I could probably go on if I wanted to. But eventually, "it's a game".
