I think the artistic evolution of the UNSC military aesthetic (and MJOLNIR perms) peaked at Reach's designs, likely in no small part due to Isaac Hannaford's talent, but now it's taken a nose dive with Halo 4's cartoonish and downright silly direction. Whereas Reach's armor looked functional and stylistically focused, H4's designs are all over the place - instead of definitive and easily identifiable general shapes, they're crammed full of completely unnecessary detail like spikes, protrusions, vents, holes and so on. Simplicity is always better, no matter how many polygons you have at your disposal.
