Since I'm posting anyway, I'm gonna bring up another point of comparison: You know how in the Reach Beta, once a vehicle was at the 'on fire' stage of damage, it's health would decay, reach zero, and spontaneously explode? Since players weren't informed of this happening (no health meter) it seemed random and arbitrary. Bungie ended up removing this feature for the release game. Battlefield 3 features a very similar mechanic, and yet in that game it works! Once your vehicle is 'disabled' (move very slowly and looks on fire) it's health will decay and it will eventually explode. Except, since you have a percentage indicator of vehicle health, you can SEE this decay happening very obviously (along with a couple of additional sound cues) so people aren't as surprised as often by the spontaneous combustion, and if they are, they learn about the feature much quicker since it's right in their face.
