I'm not gonna bother trying to come up with some mental construction so that it can make sense for you, but I'll point out that NONE of the Covenant plasma weapons make sense at all. They just wave their hands and say 'advanced alien technology' and you accept it without thinking about it. Especially that Needler... Yet the armour shielding (which we KNOW from canon is based on aforemented 'advanced alien technology') does something weird and unexpected (but utterly, completely predictable, reliable and 100% replicable) and you go 'oh mah gawd it maeks no sensez!' Your brain is broken.
