In Response To: Re: Purple and pink are long time Bungie game colo (General Vagueness) : Architechnid: I don't like it when people do this because it practically : invites misunderstanding, which could be good or bad for the work or its : author and either isn't really deserved, and someone could make something : with no intended meaning and say it's open and people could interpret it : as something other than what it is. I actually don't like it when creators don't talk about their intent, either. I'd rather know where the author is coming from, and I tend to view a work with and eye of understanding the context it was created in. That doesn't mean 'the author is dead' doesn't have its time and place, and usefulness. As for the fact that 'it practically invites misunderstanding', I don't agree with this line of thought. To go back to the Wachowski ...uh... Sibilings, they did this because they threw a bunch of view points into the Matrix. There is an allegory of the Christian gospel, and many aspects of Hinduism, Buddhism, Nihilism, Subjectivism, and Determinism, among others. In fact, the overarching story is about a battle of philosophies. When Neo fights Smith, that's freewill vs. Nihilism, or the Merovingian, thats freewill vs. determinism, or even Neo vs. Morpheus, that's blind religious faith vs. disbelief. The Matrix was intended to be two things: cram everything the Wachowski Sibs found cool into a movie, and be a catalyst for you to think, reflect, and determine what you believe. If they put their two cents in (and they do have two cents about it) then it would tend to hinder their goal to have you think for yourself. As it was put in the movie, the door is opened, but you must walk through it. The point is to 'know theyself'. This big long exposition brought to you by: creators not espousing their intent is not always a bad thing. Your problem is that people could interpret the piece 'incorrectly', but sometimes the intent is that their is not right answer. Their is not Truth with a capital T, but only your truth. I don't think this reflects reality as a whole, but have no qualms with an artist expressing this concept in their work.
