: How can you not want to read thinking about intent? Art is expression, so the
: very essence of art itself is the intent! Anybody who evaluates work this
: way is a terrible critic.

: Done. I've made my points. You've got the last word.

So, I think that intent is important when delving into a piece of fiction. For me it can often clarify things that I'm not sure about.

I disagree: Art does not = intent. Many artist would argue this. For instance, the Wachowski Bros. (at the time) did not do a commentary on any of the Matrix movies, because they didn't want the variability of ones subjective understanding of the movies to be affected by their intent. They wanted to work to stand for itself, and if you got something out of it that they didn't intend, well that was their intent. And this is but one example.

When an author creates a story, or artist a work, their intent is not all that matters. How their work affects the audience also matters. How I subjectively, or even objectively experience something may be very different than the intent of the creator. What the good General is, I think, trying to communicate is not that intent doesn't matter, but using the device 'the author is dead' allows one to look at the work as created, and more objectively understand how it interacts with society. It is but one tool, designed not to eliminate an author's intent so one doesn't ever consider it, but to see how the work affects things, regardless of the author's intent. This can, in fact even bring greater understanding when the author's intent is reintroduced into the thought process, and it can be used as a tool to judge, for the author, if they are successful at communicating their intent. For instance, ME3, the authors of the ending obviously did not get their intent across. Them saying, we intended it this way wasn't going to be good enough for the people that had issue with it, because the work wouldn't stand on it's own. With the extended cut, the work can now stand, but I would argue, it still has a limp and needs a cane like LT Dan.

I could be wrong, though...

Gobza! Give it a look-see...
