"Failure" is a : very relative term, and of course in all but the most extreme cases, a : company like MS is going to avoid that word completely. I think you've : characterized it correctly, though, and I think that characterization is : consistent with the idea of "failure" in the sense of "much : less of a success than any reasonable and conservative person would : expect"-- to say nothing of someone who might have expected some : leveling off as the franchise seeks its natural level, but still thought : that the franchise would track linearly with the increase in the 360's : installed base. Gaming can only grow so much. There were a significant number of people interested in FPS games but otherwise couldn't play them because they did not have a powerful gaming PC, because those were expensive. Enter console gaming, which made the FPS available to these people fro much less. I simply do not see there being many people who are interested in first person shooters, who lack either a gaming PC or a console. Consoles are so inexpensive that pretty much anybody interested in the genre is going to have one. There's just nowhere really for it to grow. Gaming has been, and will continue to be a niche hobby. I'm looking at the numbers for top selling games, and across the board the sales have been roughly 4-8 million for every console generation. The hits aren't getting any bigger, except if your game has 'wii' in the title.
