Actually I noticed it then, but I think I didn't post about it.

Absolutely agreed, and not entirely unexpected when a franchise strays from a proven formula. The titles that show the strong growth curve are the MC-Cortana titles. Halo Wars, ODST, and Reach all stray from that, not only in terms of absolute numbers, but also in terms of the percentage of the addressable market. You're right, from that perspective, ODST was probably fairly cost-effective, but unremarkable, and Reach was likely a disappointment.

If he didn't want anyone to interpret it that way-- which, to my way of thinking, is so inescapable it almost looks intended-- then Spector should have put more effort into making it look less like this is want he intended it to mean.

I have always strongly suspected that the MS-Bungie relationship was both more complex and less friendly than publicly portrayed. This, to me, read very much like a belated "don't let the door hit your ass on the way out" while MS plans to put the Halo franchise back on their logarithmic growth curve and dismisses Bungie for their creative hubris for thinking that Halo's success was a result of their creative input and effort instead of luck and circumstance.

That's my very personal interpretation.

As it goes to the heart of what the owners of the Halo franchise think has been, is, and should be, I'm hard pressed to identify anything that better qualifies as "Halo news" on the horizon, at least until the release of HCEA.
