You know looking back,

The ad campaign for ODST wasn't very big. At least by comparison to say H2 or H3. The first trailers we saw for it were nothing short of spectacular. I always thought the rendering of them (particularly the rookie in the rain) were awesome! But after that, I never really saw much hype for it in the outside world like I did with Halo 3. Sure, bungie's site was draped in "Prepare to drop" garb but it just didn't feel like it was going to be "big"..... Does that make sense?

I personally think some of that stems from the naming convention: Halo 3: ODST. For us die hard fans, or those invested in the rest of the lore that is Halo it makes perfect sense in the timeline. I mean, you couldn't call it Halo 2.5, people would think it involved Master Chief.

I always wondered why it wasn't simply called Halo: ODST....

Wrapping up my thoughts: I think the other thing that counted against ODST from a marketing standpoint would be the price fluctuation. When it was stated early in that this by design was a small campaign, isolated within itself as a chapter in the overall Halo Universe people had certain expectations. Here, I think MS was setting the bar low on purpose, almost like they were trying to play down ODST (that's just my thinking) and then the price was raised to justify the additional maps and such. It’s like they didn’t want to confuse people away from Halo 3m yet the two were clearly integrated feature wise.

I just wonder if maybe ODST didn't achieve what the others achieved not because you didn't play as Master Chief, but because

of the price confusion
of the length of the game (expectations, even though it was CLEAR going in it was going to be short)
of the ambiguous title (may have confused someone who isn't into Halo like we are)
of a lack of advertising by comparison

I mean, did you guys see a lot of push for ODST like we did for H2, and H3? I just don’t remember…..
