| Halo 1, ODST, and Reach... | |

In Response To: One Step Forward and Two Steps Back. (padraig08) ...had the best atmospheres in my opinion. The three of them, to me, captured the sense that Humanity was losing to this unstoppable alien juggernaught. They were all fairly bleak, and humanity really had the "futuristic" feeling to it. The opening cutscene of Halo 1 really drove the nail home that Humanity was losing without having to show anything. ODST really showed Humanity with it's back against the wall, showing us the bigger picture for the soldiers who weren't super soldiers. Reach finally showed us what the Covenant had been doing the entire war when the glassed Alexandria and shot down the civilian transports. I remember when the battlecruisers flew in on Exodus, and the flash when they started glassing. "Holy shit." I thought, and I actually felt a bit of dread. These faceless aliens were kicking our asses, and there was not a damn thing I could do about it in the big picture. Halo 2 and 3 never really did this for me. Halo 2, at the time, put me off because of the Arbiter. I don't think it was because I wasn't playing as the Chief, though I did my fair share of bitching about it at the time. I think it's because by humanizing the aliens, it kind of took their threat away. Halo 3 felt like superhero romp, and much of the gravitas and atmosphere of the series was lost to me because, well, the game started by surfing down from orbit on a door. The environments were mostly all brightly lit and shiny, without any of the doom and gloom I expected from a finale. And from what we know of Halo 4 so far? I'm...not as excited as I would be. It had none of the grander of the other openings. We've all seen the announcement trailer to Halo 2 thousands of times. That still gives me chills. That is the Halo that I fell in love with. That opening trailer had the same tone of horror and mystery that ODST and Reach carried on. Humanity, fighting tooth and nail with all of our technology, and yet we're still losing to these aliens in their majestic, whale-like ships. The erie silence of seeing those mushroom clouds all over our Earth while Covenant warships circle in orbit...as I believe someone in the trailer said; "It's the goddamned apocalypse." The opening for Halo 3 began very subdued, very subtle, while still building to a crescendo of awe that we've come to expect. Our hero walks through the desert alone, and before him the enemy unleashes an ancient device while their ships circle like vultures. It had that air of mystery without explosions and "Fuck yeah jetpacks!" The first thing we see in Halo 4's trailer? Explosions. Generic music. Sudden action. That didn't feel like a Halo trailer to me. It had none of the pacing, none of the majesty, none of the mystery. And I fear for the franchise of they can't even make a trailer feel like the home we've had for almost a decade now. (I apologize for any spelling glitches that might be in there, my keyboard is acting up a bit.)
