That's honestly how I feel. I'm an old timer. I've been on this block for years.
And I don't want to see Halo watered down to appeal to the new guys. I cringe whenever I hear something justified as "It's supposed to bring new people to the franchise", especially when it's a sub-par entry in the Haloverse.* We're already loyal fans. We don't just buy the games that come out, we hunt down the novels and the comics and the action figurines. We're the ones who are slavering over the Grunt Plushies.

So, why are you abandoning us? Are we not enough?

The following is a bunch of random thoughts on this topic.

-Star Power
This is one of the things Hollywood does that I just can't understand.

It's like the Terminator franchise. In the second movie, we get a different model of Terminator (T-101/T-800) that nevertheless has the same skin as the first one, only visibly older. It was worth it, though, for the people who went into the theaters and thought Arnie was the bad guy, only to have that "Wait, what?" moment when he tells John to get down, and proceeds to pump the T-1000 full of shotgun pellets.

In the third movie** we have a new model (T-850) that nevertheless has the SAME exterior as the first two, only ten years older... and it doesn't work. That whole "Man of Iron" presence Arnold had in the first movie is completely gone now. I'm sorry, but if bringing back a big-name actor means that I have to shut my brain off, don't bring him back. If his presence is unnecessary, it's only going to run the movie/game/story into the ground.

And I, as a fan, will take my money elsewhere.

-FNG Familiarity
I can understand, I guess, being worried that people who are new to the franchise won't understand what went on in ODST and Reach. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 were both released for a previous generation of Xbox, and neither runs well on the 360. In order to find out where New Mombassa is and what exactly led up to the events of ODST, you need to hunt down a game that was released four or five years prior.

That's where continuity lockout comes in. It's like looking at "The Forgotten Realms" books at the bookstore. All you see are thirty books by R. A. Salvador, and you start sweating and wondering "Oh, crap, where do I start?" Which books came first, which stories do I need to read to understand this one right here?

I guess this is where external help comes in to tell you what is going on and where/when this is taking place. Stuff like story segments in the manual, blurbs on the back of the box, and the good 'ol intro. Smaller things, like timestamps and consistent armor** could help as well.

-Reach and ODST?
No mention of Halo Wars? Of the colossal mistake it was to hand the Haloverse off to a double-A RTS developer with no expertise in doing story-driven campaigns, demand that they cut the game down to fit on an XBox controller, and finally push the product out the door without a few more months of polishing? I mean, if we're talking about missteps...

Could this be a prelude to coming out and saying "Hey, let's just forget that fiasco ever happened"?
