Why back away from that, though? Okay, I realize a lot of people will just focus on that. But when a publicly held company doesn't meet quarterly earning expectations, they say it "fails to meet estimates".

Here we have a reasonable standard for expected growth, and Reach is clearly on the low end of any reasonable sales estimate. "Failure" is a very relative term, and of course in all but the most extreme cases, a company like MS is going to avoid that word completely. I think you've characterized it correctly, though, and I think that characterization is consistent with the idea of "failure" in the sense of "much less of a success than any reasonable and conservative person would expect"-- to say nothing of someone who might have expected some leveling off as the franchise seeks its natural level, but still thought that the franchise would track linearly with the increase in the 360's installed base.

Campaign or multi? I've stopped playing Reach's campaign. I haven't looked at the hours but I think I've probably not logged as many hours as Halo 3 or Halo 2 (perhaps not even ODST) and recently I've been thinking of going back to replay some H3. If it weren't for podcast episodes the hours for ODST would be even lower.
