That's the thing, isn't it? To use generalizations and stereotypes, some people play for fun, some people play to win. To further use narrow blanket statements, the latter group finds that when playing to win against similar players, they get an experience that is more intense than when playing for fun. That increased intensity makes it far more exhilirating to them, which some people equate to fun (I do not, but it is nonetheless a strong emotion). Of course, there are exceptions to what I say, and it all is not accurate, but from that you should be able to understand the point I am making. Some people find it more satisfying and fulfilling when competing. Plus, to those who said that it is not fun to slaughter people with the pistol in H1, implying that these pros did that, that may be taken as offense. You must understand, when they are playing seriously, they only want to play people who are are around the same skill level as them. When playing against newbs, for example, not only is the experience horrible for the newb, but it is also horrible for the pro--because they are not challenged, which means no intensity and ultimately no satisfaction, and because it worsens their game and wastes their time. HOWEVER, for some of them, it is satisfying to slaughter an arrogant newb (putting them in their place, since it was provoked by the hypothetical newb's statements about being unbeatable or the best or being able to hang with the best, etc.). Competitive games are NOT all about having fun. Most people play for fun, yes, including myself, but a minority of people play for competitive purposes, partly because it is far more exhilirating (ala a rollercoaster ride, perhaps). To say that for games like H1 and H2, it is all about having fun, is like saying sports (including professional sports) are only about having fun. However, we know that it is more than just that, at least for them. |
