In Response To: Re: Well, so much for the respect part. (Shishka) Earlier this year I started writing a rant for the Soapbox called "Sellout Manifesto." I got about 10 pages into it (not counting footnotes) with no end in sight before I realized no one except hardcore masochists would ever want to read it. Fast-forward several months to Shish's original post at the top of this thread. I started composing a response, but it too became rather long-winded so I put it aside. So maybe now I will figure out a quick way of saying what I want to say. The bone of contention, it seems to me, is whether or not Bungie was about to run out of cash and made the Microsoft deal because the only other option was "going down with the ship" so to speak. We have already stated that this was not the case. Alex said at the time of the Microsoft deal, both internally and to the press, that we had enough money in the bank (mostly from the previous Take2 deal) to fund development through Halo's completion. I've worked for Alex and Jason for seven (!) years now and know that neither will shy from brutal honesty when it's required. I didn't feel I needed to look at the books and check Alex's math to verify his story; the reasons for the Microsoft deal went well beyond how much cash Bungie had in the bank at the time (or, for you cynics out there, how much money Alex and Jason had). If Bungie was on the ropes I think Alex would have said as much. We talked about it extensively before it happened; I believed him then and continue to believe him now. I doubt any hard "evidence" will ever be revealed to the public, and it doesn't make a difference at this point. I understand why people might doubt what we say, and I don't expect everyone to cheerfully parrot the company line. (Freedom to dissent is a beautiful thing.) But I don't think there was any deception on our part. There was more to it than money. I could go on, and on, and on...but I won't. -Matt | |
