In Response To: I'm going to come to your house... and BLAM. (vector40) : AAAAAHHHH!! : You can't do this do us. All you've done with the above post is pique our
: Can't you feed us a just a little? What KIND of things? Is it really that hard to look around the 'gaming' landscape around the time of the buyout and notice what Bungie noticed? Independant gaming companies were/are a dying breed. Getting space on retail store shelves is tied into things that go way beyond money. Think distribution, power, relationships. If you read some of the now-ancient Bungie Soapbox rants, you can get a taste of the frustration Doug and Matt and others at Bungie experienced trying to get the press and retailers to notice Bungie. There are many (rumored?) anecdotes of Doug calling someone, mentioning the Bungie name, and getting a hang-up in return. And this was during the pinnacle of Marathon and even Myth! Look at it this way... if you (Bungie) feel pretty comfortable that the games you are making are kick-ass, but notice that you're still having a hard time getting some punks to notice you, would you sit up and take notice if someone with deep pockets and already well established relationships with the press and retailers offered to buy you up and let you continue to make kick ass games? AND create the launch title for a new console box, where the numbers are very different and it's possible to get much more attention in the mainstream press? Certainly sounds appealing to me. Now, even after stating all the above, I think the above still ties somehow back into money, because even though Bungie had enough to fund Halo through completion, what Matt and Alex don't expound upon is the money that's needed *after* Halo was done. Such long-term vision may have also helped nudge Bungie into accepting the MS buyout. Matt's right, dissent is a wonderful thing. :-) | |
