In Response To: Re: i respectfully disagree. (vector40)

Ya know, I've purposely ignored each post that was noncompliant to my request that arguments be put in seperate threads. I had no idea people were still posting here, it's been a while since I started this.

I'm going to continue to ignore the other posts, as others have, but this one does need a looking over.

First off, what I said wasn't the "XBox fanboy" message you seemed to read it as.

For the record, I don't own an XBox. Nor do I own my own copy of Halo.

Unfortunately, karstux, you're the victim of hype. There are many like you. But the truth is that for the longest time, all Bungie had to show were tech demos. JUST tech demo's. We didn't see any kind of gameplay until E3, not too long before the game was finally released.

There was a godawful LOT of hype behind Halo. Not just on the part of the fans, but, as was stated, by members of Bungie as well. Fans looked at tech demo screenshots, where no real gameplay was going on, and assumed that Halo was going to be this super game capable of this, and this, and this, blah, blah blah. A former Bungie person spoke too loudly about the ideas being bounced around the studio. There was too much talk about "could-be's" and not enough real discussion, and unfortunately too many people, yourself included, translated it as "this is going to be how the game is." Even BEFORE Bungie was acquired, the game was switching game play styles, 3rd person shooter, real time strategy, etc. The fact was NOTHING was concrete until Bungie was given a real deadline. That's when decisions were actually made, reality kicked in, and Halo went from "flashy engine" to an actual game. The reality of Halo's situation took over, and "neat ideas" were replaced with "this is what's possible. Let's go farther."

If you can prove me wrong, go right ahead. I'd love to read these "official Bungie Statements" concerning the status of Halo. Especially because no such thing truly existed until Matt's weekly updates. But please, show me if you can find them.

We all fell victim to the hype. We all heard about this grandiose Halo where you could just drive forever and drive all the way across the ring structure, because of "continuous terrain mapping." Personally, I had this grandiose vision of getting together all my friends for a massive LAN party, attacking Covenant bases from a lone fort hidden in the woods.

But it was ALL talk. ALL of it. Stop being so jaded by all the old hype and accept it. What I said was completely true. Halo was formless. The acquisition didn't "neuter" Halo at all. It gave it shape. It gave Bungie the kick in the ass they needed to do something with what was only a really pretty idea.

As an aside, I suggest you try PLAYING the game before deciding its neutered. Particularly, grab a friend and play co-op, if he or she can put up with you bitching about "what Halo was supposed to be," like you're some kind of authority. If you believe reviews, then you must also be positive that the sequel to Halo is called Halo NEXT, and will be entirely online... If you haven't learned to ignore hype from the Halo exercise, then there's no helping you.

I'm sorry that it was too much to ask of you to click "Post new mesage" instead of replying directly on my thread. I wish what you had to say wasn't so full of speculation and arguments you can't backup with more than "I remember Bungie saying...!!"

Next time, research your arguments a little, and learn to recognize the difference between talk and reality. And learn to accept when talk doesn't become reality.
