The links to Marathon*; the : references to Ancient Greece; the possible implications of cryptic lines : of dialogue. : Some of these hinted at future directions the story might take. One line in : particular, from Two Betrayals, still sticks out in my mind this way, when : 343 Guilty Spark asks Master Chief: “Last time, you asked me, if it were : my choice, would I do it? Having had considerable time to ponder your : query, my answer has not changed.” The implication is obvious: that 343 : Guilty Spark already knows Master Chief, yet the reverse wasn't true. : Did this imply that Master Chief would at some point in the future travel : back through time? The possibilities were tantalising, yet sadly remain : unexplored, perhaps now permanently. : Whenever canonical changes are made to the Halo universe, they can : supplement and augment what went before, but the risk will always be that : by making the change you're chipping away at the foundations for what made : some people love Halo in the first place. When fans like Cody bring some : of the more egregious changes to light, don't think of it as right or : wrong so much as a sign that you might have gone a step too far, and : that whilst you can continue in that direction, and it might enrich the : series’ longterm success, you may be doing so at a cost to its cultural : prestige. : *On this point, I note that 343 Guilty Spark's ‘eye’ no longer features the : Marathon symbol in Anniversary . I can't understand how this could have : happened other than either artistic ignorance or spite. I'd love to hear : the explanation if it was something else entirely. This is mostly how I feel on changes made to the series. I am feeling some things have been lost along that way that didn't need to be. Some of the new that made up for it hasn't ended up being as good as what was originally there. However, I'm not fully convinced that some of the changes are made just because of a 'new direction' here and there, but by not knowing the totality of what came before and thereby missing things now and then that have to be justified or rewritten later. And all the missing Marathon logos from Reach and Anniversary is because of a copyright issue with Microsoft not owning the Marathon mark. The only one that's still present in Anniversary is the top-view design of Halo's Control Room.
