It's really not a big deal, but if they wanted to be even : more faithful to the original CE, picking that variant would have matched : better, in my mind. Not according to the picture in the Encyclopaedia. The 'heavy' and 'space-ready' troopers depicted have exactly the same leg armour, which is in-fact just limited to heavier knee pads. Only significant differences between the two are the vacuum sealed helmets, the colouration and that the heavy troopers also carry a knife on their chest. Whereas it shows a communications trooper wearing heavy lower leg armour, so that doesn't seem to indicate anything about their branch of service either. Some just wear more armour than others.
