Is it really worth the effort to have the game keep track of when it : should and shouldn't show a loaded magazine when it's on screen for far : less than a second? Well, both Halo 1 and Reach do keep track of whether or not there's a round still in the chamber. In Halo 1, there were two different reload animations for the pistol, sniper rifle, and shotgun depending on whether or not the weapon was reloaded from empty (the AR only had one reload animation). If the weapon was empty, it showed the Chief pull back the sniper rifle's charging handle or pump the shotgun, and the pistol was show with its slide locked back just like when you empty a real pistol, then he pops it closed after swapping mags. Reach did this with the AR, DMR, pistol, and sniper rifle (though not the shotgun, which is always pumped when reloaded even if there's a shell in the chamber). I imagine it wouldn't take too much effort to show a round visible in the magazine unless the magazine is being extracted from an empty weapon. Empty weapon = no rounds in ejected magazine + round chambering animation, Weapon that's not empty = round in ejected magazine + no chambering animation.
